1 Year
Duration

Languages taught

This intensive course offers specialized, multi-language training in the principles of phonetic shorthand — a vocational skill that enables writing at high speed (typically 60–150 words per minute). The curriculum is designed to prepare students for the Government Technical Examinations (GTE) in English (Pitman System) and Tamil (Official System), and Hindi shorthand is also taught.

Course structure

The course is structured across Junior, Intermediate, and Senior/Higher grades across all three languages, focusing on cumulative skill development:

  • Foundational theory — basic strokes, consonants, vowels, and positioning rules specific to the English, Tamil, and Hindi shorthand systems.
  • Abbreviations & contractions — systematic shortcuts for the most frequently occurring words and phrases, to maximize writing speed.
  • Phraseography — joining multiple words into a single continuous outline for rapid transcription.
  • Speed development — regular, timed dictation practice across official, parliamentary and commercial subject matter, to build endurance and accuracy.
  • Transcription — translating shorthand outlines back into accurate longhand, a core component of both the examination and real practical work.

Career relevance

A certification in English, Tamil, or Hindi Shorthand, particularly at the Senior/Higher Grade, is a qualification sought for roles including:

  • Stenographers in Central and State Government Secretariats, Courts, and Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs)
  • Personal Assistants (P.A.) and Executive Secretaries in private corporations
  • Court reporters and journalists who require real-time transcription skills
